More than a quarter of bottled water is simply processed tap water. This includes Pepsi's Aquafina and Coca-Colas Dasani.
Is bottled water cleaner? Federal regulations for municipal water are far more stringent. than regulations for bottled water. Bottled water is allowed higher levels of many contaminants with more lenient requirements for filtration, testing and reporting. If you don't trust tap water, have old plumbing or you think tap water tastes funny, try a water filter like those from PUR or Brita.
"Save the Earth, it's where I keep my stuff." According to the Pacific Institute's Fact Sheet, manufacturing the 30 plus billion plastic water bottles we bought in 2006 required the equivalent of more than 17 million barrels of oil; that's enough to fuel more than one-million vehicles for a year! Those 30 plus billion bottles produced more than 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, used three times the amount of water in the bottle, that doesn't even include transporting the bottles! Since nearly 25% of bottled water crosses national borders before reaching consumers, adding in the transportation brings the energy used to over 50 million barrels of oil - enough to run three million cars for a year.
